I have been knitting and crocheting since I was 5 - 7 years old and "designing" since I was around 9 - my dolls had some unusual 80's outfits! However having been made to feel pretty rubbish at anything creative at school, I followed my childhood dream of becoming a nurse and worked in various NHS roles for a number of years.
About 6 years ago a pre-existing medical condition got markedly worse, ending up with me being housebound, immobile and in constant pain. To overcome the frustration and take my mind off the pain I started knitting and crocheting again, thanks to a find at the scrapstore. Trawling the internet for inspiration lead me into the world of creating yarns from unusual materials. Thanks to help from the pain clinic and my own stubborness I gradually improved and started a Folksy shop, joined a craft group and discovered the Art House....I then started going to craft fairs, just testing out what I could cope with and started to get enquiries about teaching and commissions..... and the rest as they say is history!
I am still disabled but apart from when those silly stairs get in the way, its not a barrier to anything for me, by tapping into my creativity and gaining confidence I've been able to work with others experiencing disability and ill health and see them make real, lasting progress through crafting too! I have a busy and enjoyable life, meet a wide range of lovely, interesting people and feel useful too!
Plus with the help of the creative courses offered by Jani at the Art House, I've discovered that I am creative, that I can "do art" and have finally put to bed the "feedback" I received at school.... so my aim is really to get out there and show people that they have talent and ability, and help them to explore ways to find it, using yarn!
Hi, I'm Bev Newman, a disabled yarn artist and can be found at Romsey Market on 1st Tues of month. I love creating art & textiles using knitting, crochet and embroidery. I enjoy passing on my skills & offer workshops and courses for adults and children. I facilitate craft groups for people with additional needs, inspired by my own journey. I have a passion for recycling and use all manner of things to make my own "yarns". I enjoy working to commission and creating things just for you!

I enjoy working from vintage knitting or crochet patterns and am often inspired by vintage in my own designs. I also enjoy using vintage patterns as a reminisence tool with older adults
I enjoy attending craft fairs and am always willing to demonstrate my skills, help you out with a knitting or crochet conundrum and provide taster workshops.... and if you want a little something made on the day I may be able to oblige!
I teach knitting and crochet to adults and children from beginners to intermediate level. So if you'd love to create with yarn but aren't sure where to start or want to take your work to the next level - get in touch. I also run creative workshops for families and children using macrame and recycled materials to create jewellery and upcycled or customised clothing.
I enjoy getting out and sharing my skills with others, so am always happy to offer workshops and taster sessions at local festivals and events. As well as "conventional" crochet and knitting I can also create "yarn" from carrier bags and make lovely flowers for your garden, show you how to do broomstick crochet and work with old textiles to create "yarn".
I enjoy sharing my personal journey with others. My craft skills have helped me overcome a significant disability and long term illness, rebuild my life and go in a whole new direction. I'm also happy to talk about recycling and repurposing non-conventional materials for knitting and crochet and share my passion for recycling.
I can provide unique handknitted or crocheted bunting for your event, in colours and designs of your choice and offer crafty activities for adults and children that fit in with your theme. Or if you're looking for eye catching accessories to wear to the event why not get in touch and I'll create something unique for you!
I always welcome commissions large or small. So whether you want an eyecatching piece of knitted or crochet jewellery, an outfit for a much loved bear, a new baby present or a unique item of clothing, wall art or homewares, please get in touch so we can discuss your ideas :-)
I offer private tuition to individuals and small groups at a venue of their choice - must be accessible! Prices start at £12 per hour for up to 6 people, with a small additional travel charge, depending on where you live. I work with you to devise a lesson pack, based on what you'd like to learn, we arrange a date and time and go from there. As well as individual tuition, you receive a learning pack which covers everything you've learned to keep for reference. You can book 1 lesson or a block of lessons, its entirely up to you. Encaustic Artist and jewellery maker Karen Tait and I offer "The Home Craft Fair". You can buy handcrafted goods at home straight from the designer makers, commission us on the night, enjoy a crafty demonstration and support 2 small local creatives. We bring our "stall" to you and you and your guests can take home their purchases on the night, no waiting for delivery! Plus the hostess hast 10 - 15% discount on their shopping or to the equivalent to donate to a local charity. Why not give us a try?
I create a wide range of accessories, gifts and homewares that are ready to buy from my Folksy shop or my regular stall at Romsey Market - always there 1st Tuesday of the month and often sneak an extra Tuesday or 2 in! I also enjoy working to commission, so if you have something you would like made from a pattern or an idea you'd like designed and created, give me a shout :-)
I offer regular craft workshops at the Velmore Centre, Chandler's Ford, The Three Bears Play Cafe, North Baddesley Library and Fed Up of Netley. Please see the events section for more information. I also work in partnership with encaustic artist Karen Tait to offer unique workshops combining knitting, crochet and embroidery with encaustic art to create soft furnishings, home decorations and jewellery
