Formed in 1981 in Brougham Road, Southsea, aspex moved to the historic Vulcan Building in Gunwharf Quays in 2006. Our seasons are based around questions – for example, Does Making Things Make Us Human? or What’s Your Revolution? Exhibitions, talks and participatory events are programmed around these questions, helping us explore possible answers with the help of our audience.

Aspex relies on on the support of our friends, donations and volunteers to maintain our dynamic creative programmes and sustain a vital and relevant link to our local community. Our programme of inspirational and challenging exhibitions of British and International art is complemented by both our Participation and Artist Support facilities.

As a registered charity we are supported by public funds, while all profits from our Café Bar, Craft & Design Space and Venue Hire are reinvested back into our creative programme.

Aspex supports emerging artists in Portsmouth and beyond through a programme of artist focused activities, including one to one surgeries, workshops and symposia. We aim to encourage critical engagement, self assessment and a proactive approach.

We also work with businesses and organisations, both big and small, to continue to offer dynamic opportunities to collaborate with us. You can find out more on the dedicated 'aspex for business' section of our website.
