Apples and Snakes is the leading organisation for performance poetry in England, with a national reputation for producing exciting and innovative participation and performance work in spoken word.
We work in partnership with creative individuals and organisations across the country to produce high quality artistic experiences - including work with, for and by young people - that raise the profile of spoken word and push the boundaries of the artform, artists and audiences. We offer professional development for artists including advice, training and performance opportunities at a local, national and international level, with a particular focus on nurturing emerging talent and championing marginalised and disenfranchised voices.
Apples and Snakes was set up in 1982 by a group of poets in order to establish more performance poetry events. Over the last three decades, Apples and Snakes has been the development ground for many high profile poets and artists, inspired countless young people and taken performance poetry to new places. Since 2002, Apples and Snakes has made the transition to a national organisation and currently has Programme Co-ordinators in London, the North East, the South East, the South West, the West Midlands, the East and partnership projects with venues, literature organisations and artists taking place across the country.
The South East Apples and Snakes programme coordinator is Peter Hunter, an experienced performance poet and arts administrator, who is currently running regular events in Southampton and Margate, supporting organisations such as ArtfulScribe and Tricky Arts in Southamptona and Hampshire, supporting performance poets on thier creative journey and working with arts organisations across the region bringing inspirational poetry and performance workshops to poets and budding poets across the region.

With 30 years of experience at organising events and workshops as well as mentoring and supporting performance poets, Apples and Snakes has programme coordinators in 5 regions of England, with the South East programme coordinator being based at The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton.

Apples and Snakes works primarily with performance poets of all ages, providing workshops and events based around this exciting artform. From slam champs to ground-breaking word-artists, Apples and Snakes runs events and workshops based around the skills needed to compete in a poetry slam.
Apples and Snakes have many years experience of running events for performers and audiences of all ages and interests. Performance poetry is a dynamic and inspirational artform which can both entertain and eductate, often both at the same time. We can run events aimed at adult/grown up audiences, events aimed at youth audiences and events for children and even toddlers.
These events include poetry, performance poetry and story telling.
We can adapt events to be inclusive and dynamically involve the audience and work with film and digital technology and relish experimentation and multi-media
Apples and Snakes offer performance poetry workshops for all ages and ranges of ability, but we have poets skilled particularly in working with disadvantaged children and young people in schools, prisons, hospitals and on the streets to build up their confidence, literacy and employability.
If you are interested in a workshop, in the first instance contact Peter Hunter at [email protected] for a discussion of your needs.
